How to choose and apply an invitation template

Tim Datella4 minWorks on the free plan

Anyone can judge a design once they see it move. Datella's template gallery plays a live preview right on each card, free and without an account. Applying one is a single tap with clear limits: the decorations of each section and its backdrop change. Colors and fonts stay under your control.

Prerequisites

  • An event created (to apply onto)
  1. Browse the gallery without an account

Open datella.app/templates on a phone or laptop. Design cards appear twelve per page, and the card you touch or hover plays a live preview of the invitation — the moving side, not the music. Filter by event type with the chips on top, tap "See it live" to open a design in full, and page through with the numbered pager below.

  2. Check five things before falling for one

Before committing: does it have the sections you need (a digital envelope? enough gallery space?), how does it read on a phone screen — that is where your guests open it — can its text run in your languages, and how busy is the motion for relatives who prefer calm. A design that stuns on a laptop can feel crowded on a small screen.

  3. Use it before you have an account

On a design's page, "Use this template" leads you to sign-up with your choice remembered automatically. Once your account exists and the first event forms, Datella asks "Apply <template name> to your invitation?": tap Apply and the editor opens with the design staged for confirmation — one more tap on its apply button and it is truly in place. Tap "Not now" to change your mind; the prompt does not nag again on its own.

  4. Apply or switch from the editor

Already have an invitation underway? Open the editor, tap the "Theme" tab, then "Browse templates". The picker shows a live preview and two buttons: "Apply to entire invitation", or "Apply to this section" when you want a single section to adopt the style. Entries already in use carry "Apply again (reset to template)".

  5. Read the confirmation closely

Before a whole-invitation apply, Datella names which sections will change and how many of them carry your own edits — your edits on those sections are overwritten with the template's style. Per-section decorations and backgrounds are swapped; the color palette, fonts, guest list, and link address stay untouched. For immediate regret: the editor's undo button restores the decorations, but the section backdrops and the page backdrop the template brought do not undo with it — those are tidied by hand in each section's settings.

Common questions

I already customized decorations. Is applying a template still safe?

Safe with one caveat: the confirm counts your customized sections, and edits on an overwritten section are replaced by the template style. Untouched sections stay safe, and guests, RSVPs, and the link address are never touched.

Does the template bring its colors?

No, and neither does its content: a template installs section decorations and backdrops only — the palette and font pair remain whatever your theme settings say, and no sample text or photos are injected. Every design in the gallery is usable with no per-design fee. The theme tutorial shows painting it yourself.

Can I apply a template to just one section?

Yes. In the picker, "Apply to this section" carries the template style onto the selected section alone — handy when only the gift envelope should follow a certain style.

What happened to the designs I saw at /designs?

They are all still here. The old /designs address now redirects to the new gallery; no design was lost in the move.
